A message from Dinny Evans and The Family of Margie Griswold
Saturday September 30, 2006 was the Grand Opening of For Goodness Sake. As I remember, it was the weekend of the Truckee Wine, Walk and Shop Festival. The old popcorn machine was cranking out popcorn, we had a lemonade fountain and David Griswold was on the sidewalk inviting people to come in and have a tour of this new business offering in town. The opening of For Goodness Sake had been years in the making. The building had been totally remodeled, decorated, furnished and a library had been stocked. There had been a team working on the mission statement of For Goodness Sake and on this day, they were ready to bring people inside to share their vision.
The concept of For Goodness Sake from the very beginning was clear: a nondenominational spiritual center for the community of Truckee. David and Margie Griswold were the founders of For Goodness Sake, but it was Margie’s baby to develop and grow and she did it over the coming years! Although that first year they kept their identities private, until at a holiday gathering in December 2007, Margie stood up and identified herself and her husband David as not only the founders, but as the full benefactors of For Goodness Sake. It was quite an evening! From that opening day in 2006 to 2017 EVERYTHING For Goodness Sake hosted was a gift of the Griswold’s to the community, with no fees charged. Over those years, and still today, For Goodness Sake has been a gathering place for spiritual seekers and thinkers to borrow books from the library, attend weekly class and special presentations and workshops from renowned spiritual teachers and thinkers. Margie had a deep commitment to offering these teachings for free to the community, so that all might have access to spirituality no matter what their background or financial status. She knew that her own spiritual life was the backbone of her own life, and wanted to share that with everyone in the community.
Margie Griswold was a pure and beautiful light at For Goodness Sake, and in the world. I would smile every time I went to For Goodness Sake and saw her there. She loved what she and her team had created, and stayed active for many many years. For Goodness Sake embodied who she was, and what mattered most to her in the world, her own spiritual practice, and that laid the foundation of all that has flourished there over the almost two decades.
Both David and Margie stayed vibrant well into their 90’s, and after David’s passing in June of 2020, Margie moved to Virginia to live close to her daughter and family. Margie passed away this past week, surrounded by family, love and at peace. For those of you who had the pleasure of meeting and working with Margie, what a beautiful gift you experienced! And for those of you who didn’t get a chance to meet her, she is so much a part of the energy of For Goodness Sake you have been blessed as well. She was loved, and spread love to all! In loving memory of Margie, we are forever grateful for your vision and generosity.
